4 Supplements to Complement your Osteopathic Treatment

Coming to see an Osteopath is your first step to healing, repairing and simply maintaining your body. However if you eat the right foods and do the right exercise your rehabilitation will come on in leaps and bounds. Taking supplements are a great way to make sure that your body is getting the right minerals and vitamins. The results of this will sky rocket to full health and Peak performance. Here are 4 supplements we advise our patients to take at Optimum Wellbeing Centre, Worongary, Gold Coast.

1. Magnesium

Firstly Magnesium is a very important mineral which is used in over 300 reactions in the body. From bone density and heart health to muscle tension and nerve activation. If you suffer from magnesium deficiency you may suffer involuntary muscle contractions or spasms. A twitchy muscle is a good sign you are magnesium deficient. Taking magnesium will help keep muscle tension down and promote relaxation. If you take it in the evening it will also help you get a great nights sleep. The most absorbable form of magnesium is magnesium glycerinate. Aim to take between 600-1000 mg per day.

2. Curcumin (Tummeric)

Curcumin is actually a derivative of turmeric and is one of the most well researched natural compounds. Studies show that 200mg of Curcumin a day can help reduce pain and increase mobility in osteoarthritis patients. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects can be a possible natural alternative to anti-inflammatory medication.

If you are using turmeric powder it is important to prepare it properly. For best results you need to heat it gently, add a fat (like coconut oil or ghee), and add black pepper for best absorption.

3. Fish oil

Fish oil is another well researched supplement that can help with inflammation and arthritis. Fish oil has two very important omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are EPA and DHA which help modulate inflammation in the body. You can get a good amount of fish oil in the diet by consuming oily fish such as salmon, herring and sardines. Or supplementing with a clean fish oil supplement. Ask your health professional which brands they recommend. Fish oil can go rancid fast and this will hinder your body’s healing process so getting a good source of fish oil is key.

4. Collagen

Collagen is a protein found in parts of the body such as our joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and skin. We have the most amount of collagen in the body when we are children. Hence why children are like a ball of rubber and the body’s production of collagen slows down as we age.

Supplementing with collagen can help reduce joint pain and degeneration and help keep the elasticity in our tissues.Collagen is a great supplement if you have any degeneration or joint damage.  This may include meniscus tears/degeneration in the knees and vertebral disc degeneration. As well as taking a supplement another great way to absorb collagen is through making and consuming bone broth.
