How to Relieve Plantar Fasciitis or Foot Pain

What exactly is Plantar Fasciitis? Why are you experiencing foot pain? Your feet contain muscles, bones, tendons and connective tissue. With plantar fasciitis, micro tears or inflammation can affect the connective tissue part of your feet causing pain whilst walking.

During your consult, it is important to give a complete history to your osteopath as this will allow them to determine the best treatment depending on the cause.

There are two types of causes for Plantar Fasciitis:

Traction:

This is when the fascia in your feet are stretched more than they should be. This can be due to over pronation during walking, being overweight, pregnancy and wearing shoes with poor arch support. When the fascia is pulled or compressed, this can create small bone spurs at the bottom of your feet which can cause pain due to inflammation surrounding it.

Compression:

This type is more associated with continual compression trauma. Running and dancing are two common types of sports that can contribute to this pain.
Your osteopath will then complete a hands-on assessment and treatment of your child. The treatment involves gentle movements and we encourage parents to be close by whilst this occurs. Your osteopath will explain any treatment during the consult and also let you know if any future treatments are required.

Symptoms:
Pain can be felt above and below the foot, especially whilst walking. The pain can be quite intense first thing in the morning but gets better once you walk around. You may also feel associated leg or lumber pain that occurred around the same time.

Diagnosis:
Your osteopath is extremely skilled in diagnosing plantar fasciitis. Osteopaths use their hands to palpate associated structures and will take a complete history of the injury to form a diagnosis. If required, osteopaths are able to refer you for the appropriate scans required.

What can I do?
If you feel this might be the cause of your foot pain, having a number of treatments may improve your outcome and assist you reaching your goals.

What will my osteopath do?
Treatment varies from person to person, but it will usually involve treatment on your feet as well as legs and low back. Your osteopath may also tape your feet or give you home exercises to complete between treatments.
