Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a safe non-invasive therapy that uses an increase in atmospheric pressure to increase oxygen supply to cells and tissues. At a greater pressure additional oxygen dissolves into the blood plasma and enters the tissues directly.
This stimulates the body’s healing processes, increases stamina and endurance and helps the body reach a state of balance and wellbeing.
At Optimum Wellbeing we are offering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to patients, athletes with sports injuries or who want to increase stamina and endurance, those with sleep issues and anyone seeking assistance with the issues listed below.
How does it work?
Normally it is the red blood cells which distribute the majority of oxygen in your body, however with mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy the increased pressure forces oxygen into the body fluids, more oxygen is dissolved into the plasma greatly increasing the oxygen levels. Oxygen is needed to complete the metabolic processes in each one of our cells. In the Hyox hard shell chamber you are connected to 100% oxygen where as in the Mild (soft) chamber you are breathing oxygen through a concentrator of around 93 – 95% oxygen. The chambers themselves are comfortable and relaxing creating a meditative and restorative experience

Frequently Asked Questions About
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
How will I feel after a session?
After your initial hyperbaric oxygen session it is natural to feel a little light headed or hungry however as you experience more sessions these symptoms decrease. It is advised that you don’t have a session on an empty stomach and to drink plenty of fluids after. High oxygen saturation often makes some people feel light headed at first.
What does it feel like inside the chamber?
The Hyox hard shell chamber allows you to sit up right in a reclining position and we are able to give you something to watch on a screen to keep you occupied. So it is a very comfortable experience.
How many sessions are recommended?
The more regularly you can have hyperbaric oxygen sessions the greater the benefit. Once a day would be a good protocol for those experiencing high level inflammation, for example post surgery. The initial consultation with our Consultant will give you a better idea of how many would be the most beneficial for the symptoms you are experiencing.
I have a head cold can I still have a session?
A head cold may compromise your ability to equalise the pressure in your ears so it is not advised to have a session in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber until you have recovered from your head cold.
I am pregnant, is this a contraindication for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Yes hyperbaric oxygen therapy is contraindicated during pregnancy so you cannot have a session whilst pregnant.
Is it okay to fall asleep in the chamber?
Yes. If you do fall asleep you reap the benefits of going into a deeply relaxed state so your oxygen intake deepens. This can be extremely rejuvenating.
I have difficulty equalising my ears, will this be a problem?
If you have narrow eustachian tubes or any sinus issues then equalising your ears at pressure may be a problem. An easy test to do is to try and equalise your ears whilst just sitting up before going into the chamber. If you can equalise your ears at a normal pressure you should have no difficulty in equalising them at a greater pressure. The key is to start equalising as soon as you feel the pressure increasing inside the chamber and if you do so whilst in a sitting position it is easier to do. If you cannot equalise your ears please let the staff know immediately so they can halt the procedure and return you to normal atmospheric pressure. You should not continue the session if you experience any pain in your ears.
