Sciatica

By Dr Nick Bradley | February 7, 2017

Sciatica is a common problem that we treat with osteopathy here in Optimum Wellbeing, Gold coast. What is Sciatica? Sciatica is a condition when the sciatic nerve is compressed. This can result in pain, numbness and tingling or weakness down the back of the buttocks, leg, and feet. Sciatica can come on with a sudden injury or as a result of gradual wear and tear over time.

How do we Treat Sciatica?

The first thing we do here Optimum Wellbeing is we diagnose what is causing the irritation to the sciatic nerve in the first place. Sciatica can be caused by disc bulges/prolapses in the lower back. Or lumber spine degeneration in the lower back. It could even be hip muscle spasm, SIJ dysfunction, pregnancy or piriformis syndrome.

Once we have made a correct diagnosis then the correct management plan for osteopathic treatment can be made. For best results this is combined with specific exercises such as gentle swimming or walking. Stretching and strengthening may also be advised depending on the cause. It can also be useful to combine with over the counter medication or medication prescribed by your GP. Natural supplements such as Curcumin (tumeric), magnesium and fish oil can also be of great benefit.
